![]() ![]() If it is coded 75014W2R, it got Whitewalls. If that box is coded 75014RSW, it got Red Lines. On the Fremont Manifest, there is a box in the 2nd line labelled "TIRES". If so, I would wonder if perhaps the early GTOs with FY Whitewalls got 14圆 wheels or maybe they got 14x5 and the FZ code might indicate the same tires as the FY but with the wider 14圆 wheels. ![]() I have never determined if the 750x14 tires ALWAYS used 14圆 wheels even on non-GTOs or if the wider wheels were only used on GTOs. Another theory of mine is based on the fact that the GTO was supposed to have 14圆 wheels. It is possible that the code was changed to FZ for the GTO to distinguish between an extra cost option and the no cost GTO option even though the tires themselves were still the same. The FY tires could be ordered for the Safari or any V8 Tempest at extra cost but No Cost on a GTO. Regardless of Car Model, the 1st character coded the tire size (F was 7.50x14) and the 2nd character coded the sidewall type (Y was always Whitewall). The Whitewalls were coded FY on early '64 GTOs, later year it was changed to FZ, I have not determined why. There is also a box labelled "TIRE CODE" on the KC & Balt Manifests, the Red Lines were coded FR. Decode for a GTO is the same, if these boxes are coded 06, it got Whitewalls, if coded 07, it got Red Lines. The KC & Baltimore Manifests were coded similarly, but you need to check boxes 35 & 36 instead. If it is coded with a 6, it got Whitewalls. If box 73 is coded with a 7, it got Red Lines. On the Pontiac Plant Manifest, check boxes 72 & 73. If that was how it was done, I kinda wonder if some buyers checked that box without realizing that they were over-riding the Red Lines?Īnyway, if you check your PHS record, you can determine if the car was built with Red Lines or Whitewalls. I don't know if you could specify on the Dealer Order (there was a checkoff for the 750x14 Whitewalls so perhaps if you didn't want Red Lines you checked that box). ![]() I have never figured out why some '64 GTOs got the Red Lines and others didn't. Whitewall tires were a no charge substitution. However, if you are looking to match the factory tires, you should know that a large percentage of '64 GTOs did not get them from the factory. ![]()
